Highly Satisfactory

On a wet afternoon in December, we opted for lunch at The Devonshire Arms PILSLEY, but after one look at the very full car park, we went on to The Devonshire Arms at BEELEY. This is a memorable dining experience and I mean pleasantly memorable. The ambience is superb, with a choice of traditional or more sophisticated surroundings - we chose the former and established ourselves near the open log fire. The staff were young, pleasant and attentive. I had the rotisserie of the day, which in this case was poussin. It was cooked to perfection - beautifully presented with a very serviceable large carver to quarter the bird. I was alittle disappointed not to get what it said on the menu: with game chips, bread pudding and redcurrant jelly, but it came with a little tower of chunky chips and a very tastily dressed salad with a garlic mayonnaise dip - all very acceptable and appropriate. For pudding I had the Devonshire Junket: a pleasant confection, but I would have preferred it to be a little more fruity and summery. The jelly was a little too firm. The chardonnay was excellent and served in one of those very elegant tall glasses with an exaggerated tulip. Notwithstanding these very minor criticisms, this was as fine a dining experience as one could have in the Peak District. I recommend it enthusiastically and I will certainly dine there again.

A good blend of the old and new

This place is highly recommended. I didn't stay, but I had a business meeting recently here - actually in the Malt Vault (perfect for a meeting) - and decided to stay for lunch afterwards in the Brasserie restaurant. I was impressed with the nice feel to the Brasserie - it is quite a small but bright room, with a contemporary feel, with only about 10 (round wooden) tables, but every chair is a brightly patterned, very comfortable armchair. Along one wall is a huge picture window which looks out into the charmingly classic Dales village of Beeley and the stream which passes by - complete with ducks!

Much of the produce on the menu is local and the dishes were reasonably priced at £11-15 main course. I had a delicious baby chicken. The wine list was pretty good and included a bigger choice of wines by the glass than you would expect.

I overheard one of the other diners say to another: "they have really blended the old and the new very well" - which is a very fair comment.

The Devonshire Beeley has a very nice feel to it and is worth a detour if you are in the Chatsworth area.
